ABSTRACT

Background and objectives: The objective of the present study was to study the the clinicopathological profile of the lung cancer in Mahabubnagar. Materials and methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of histopathologically proven cases of bronchogenic carcinoma admitted in our hospital from January 2011 to May 2016. Results: Our study included 67 patients with confirmed cases of lung cancer. Male to female ratio was 1.7:1. The common age group was 40-60 years (52.2%). The most common histopathological type was Adenocarcinoma (38.8%) followed by Squamous cell carcinoma (31.4%). Endobronchial biopsy has more yields in squamous cell carcinoma 8 cases (38.1%), CT Guided biopsy has more yields in Adenocarcinoma 14 cases (53.8%), Small cell carcinoma 4 cases (66.7%), and in carcinoma in situ 6 cases (55.4%), pleural biopsy has highest yield in the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma 1 case (100%). Among all the procedures CT Guided biopsy has the highest diagnostic yield 29 cases (43.2%). Conclusion: CT guided biopsy has the highest yield for the diagnosis of lung malignancies especially if the tumour is peripherally located.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The study attempt to assess the effectiveness of Benson’s relaxation therapy on reduction of stress among primigravid mothers attending the outpatient department in a selected hospital at Kannur, with the objectives of evaluating the stress among the primigravid mothers before and after the Benson’s relaxation therapy and to associate the level of stress with selected demographic variables. Methods: A total of 30 primigravid mothers after third month of gestation were selected for the study. The information regarding background data were collected from the primigravid mothers by self-administered rating scale and the level of hemoglobin status was noted from the health records. Selected primigravid mothers were given pretest questionnaire and Benson’s relaxation therapy was administered to all group members for 20 minutes and instructed to continue this for a period of 15 days. Post-test using rating scale was conducted 15 days after the administration of Benson’s relaxation therapy. Result: The result of the study shows that the post-test mean stress score was less than the pre-test mean stress score. The obtained mean difference between the pre-test and post-test regarding stress score was statistically significant. Hence research hypothesis “there will be a significant difference in the stress scores before and after Benson’s relaxation therapy among the primigravid mothers” has been retained. Conclusions: It was inferred that primigravid mothers who practiced Benson’s relaxation therapy had significant decrease in post-test stress score. Also there was significant association with the level of stress and some demographic variables.

ABSTRACT

Background: Automobile exhaust related air pollution have become a major health hazard. Traffic police personnel, due to their continuous and prolonged exposure are likely to be the worst affected group in this regard. Many studies in the past have documented impaired respiratory function among traffic policemen. Studies from India, exploring the relationship between duration of exposure and respiratory function is necessary. Objective: To compare the pulmonary function parameters between controls and traffic police exposed to air pollutants for variable duration Materials and methods: The study was a community based analytical cross sectional study in Telangana state from August 2012 to November 2013. A total of 120 study participants, including 30 controls and 90 traffic police (30 in each of decadal age groups from 21 to 50 years) were studied. Lung functions were measured by Spirowin. FVC (L), FEV1 (L), FEV1 / FVC ratio, FEF 25 - 75 (L/Sec) and PEFR (L/Sec) were measured and compared. Results: The absolute and percentage predicted values of FEV1 were higher in control group, compared to traffic police and they have shown gradually decreasing trend with increasing age band which was statistically significant. The mean FVC value and percentage predicted was highest in 21 to 30 age group traffic police and showed gradually declining trend with increasing age band. The other pulmonary function parameters like FEV1/FVC, FEF 25-75 and PEFR have also shown gradually declining trend with increasing age group among traffic police. Conclusion: The traffic police had poor respiratory function, compared to general population, which declined with increasing age of the individual and increasing duration of exposure
